Erlend Skomsvoll Trio Live at the Norwegian Seamen’s Church
"You need to get yourself a trio, Erlend."
This is what the legendary Svein Finnerud told a young Erlend Skomsvoll back in 1991. Since then, Erlend Skomsvoll has established himself as a formidable interpreter of others’ music, a composer, bandleader, and orchestra conductor, collaborating with greats such as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Kaizers Orchestra, Mathias Eick, Marius Neset, Arve Tellefsen, DNBE, KORK, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Allegria, among many others, and notably with Come Shine, where he played piano and was central as an arranger. He has won Spellemann Awards in jazz and classical music, as well as the prestigious Buddy Award. Yet, delving deeply into the piano trio format has long remained a dream.
Now, Skomsvoll is clearing his desk, taking a step back from composing for large orchestras, and dedicating all his time and creativity to piano playing and trio work. He is joined by a unique rhythm section: double bassist Roger Morland and drummer Knut Aalefjær, who combine jazz and classical sensibilities at a high artistic level. This trio not only forms a tight, sophisticated jazz ensemble but also allows Skomsvoll to incorporate classical music’s harmonic and melodic phrasing into a rich jazz expression.
The collaboration began during a COVID-reduced concert with Marius Neset and DNBE in 2021, and the trio has since met regularly to develop a personal musical voice. Now you can hear this extraordinary interpreter perform his own music, finally in the trio format!
With pieces such as “Male tangentene dine,” “Her står jeg og der står du,” “Måkkebøkke,” “Rimfrost,” and many other creative, beautiful, heartfelt, and groovy compositions, we promise a truly special concert experience.
