Musikk i Nordland celebrates Ravel!
Welcome to an evening of music by Maurice Ravel (18751937), who would have turned 150 in 2025. Throughout the past year, Musikk i Nordland has presented several concerts in honor of the French composer, best known for his orchestral work Boléro (1928). Ravel was considered by many to be Frances greatest living composer during the 1920s and 1930s. He is renowned for combining impressionistic sonorities with neoclassical structure and elements of jazz. In the Violin Sonata in G major (19231927), performed by violin and piano, one can notice his fascination with the distinct character of the two instruments. Across its three movements, you will hear Ravels American influences, particularly from the blues. An exciting, original, and almost hypnotic work. The Piano Trio in A minor (1914) blends refined tonal colors with long melodic lines and rhythmic vitality. It was composed in the spring and summer just before Europe entered the First World War. Despite this, Ravels piano trio transports us into a sensual dreamscape, far removed from politics and war. Ravels Sonata for Violin and Cello in A minor (19201922) was dedicated to Claude Debussy, who died in 1918. The premiere took place on April 6, 1922, with Hélène Jourdan-Morhange on violin and Maurice Maréchal on cello. Repertoire Sonata for Violin and Piano in G major Allegretto Blues.
