Welcome to Narvik

Narvik is situated between steep mountain and narrow fjords. With astonishing, Arctic nature as a backdrop, the region offers a wide range of activities and experiences both during winter and summer time. A combination of spectacular Arctic nature with dramatic WW2 history, and the Ofoten Railway makes the town a unique destination.

Narvik is a relatively young town, established in 1902. Before the 20th century Narvik consisted of only a few farms, at present Narvik is a developing town with 18,500 inhabitants. The reason for town's existence is the Swedish mining town of Kiruna. Narvik was founded in 1902, the same year the Ofoten Railway was opened for transport of iron-ore from Kiruna in Sweden to Narvik's ice-free harbour. The iron-mining company LKAB is responsible for iron ore unloading and loading onto large cargo ships from all over the world.

Narvik has daily train departures to and arrivals from Sweden in addition to daily bus departures to all major towns in Northern Norway. Just an hour drive away is the regional Harstad / Narvik Airport in Evenes.
