The mountain resort Björkliden is located high above Torneträsk, with a wide view of Lapporten, Nuolja and the mountains that stretch further into Swedish Lapland. Here the air is clear, the pace is slower and the horizon is larger than many other places along the coast.
This is a destination that fits well as part of the journey through the Narvik region. From Narvik, follow the Ofotbanen or E10 eastwards, over the mountains and into the northern Swedish high mountain landscape. In a short time, the journey goes from fjord, harbor and city life to high mountains, birch forests, plateaus and Swedish mountain traditions.Björkliden is especially known for its views. Torneträsk is located as a large, open water table under the mountains, while Lapporten forms one of the most recognizable mountain profiles in Swedish Lapland. Close by is Silverfallet, where Rakkasjohka flows through a small canyon before the water meets Torneträsk. The trip there is short, but provides a raw encounter with Björkliden's landscape: birch forest, rock, waterfall, beach and mountain views in the same experience.
In winter, Björkliden is a quiet ski resort with panoramic views, plenty of space, family-friendly slopes and mountain terrain for more experienced skiers. The ski resort has a view of Torneträsk and Lapporten, and is part of Arctic Ski Resorts together with Riksgränsen and Narvikfjellet. For guests who want to combine several ski destinations on one trip, Björkliden provides a different rhythm than Narvik and Riksgränsen: quieter, more open and close to the high mountains.
When the snow recedes, Björkliden becomes a starting point for hiking, cycling and guided mountain experiences. Here you can walk historical routes along the Navvy Trail, join a family trip that provides a safe introduction to the mountain life, explore the Kåppasjokk caves with a guide, play golf under the midnight sun or follow the path through Kärkevagge towards Trollsjön, also known as Rissájávri.
Trollsjön is one of the area's most famous hiking destinations. The trip goes through a rocky valley shaped by ice, water and time, with large boulders, mountain vegetation and clear streams along the way. At the bottom of the valley lies the clear mountain lake surrounded by steep mountainsides. The area is vulnerable, and guests should follow marked trails and avoid swimming in the lake to preserve water quality.
Björkliden also has a clear historical side. The place grew in connection with the construction of the Ore Railway, the railway that connected the ore fields in Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik. Gammelgården, Hotell Fjället and the history of the navvies make Björkliden more than a mountain resort. Here, too, the story of railways, work, traffic and mountain life is close to the day's experiences. It's easy to stay in Björkliden. Hotell Fjället provides proximity to restaurants, activities and views, while Kåppas hytteby, Solhyllan, Gammelgården, Låktatjåkko Mountain Station and camping provide different ways to stay in the landscape. The dining experiences follow the same rhythm: from Restaurang Lapporten with a view of the mountains, to Snöbaren, Lobbybaren, Rakkaskåtan, Pub Rallaren and Låktatjåkko Mountain Station high up in the mountains.
Björkliden is suitable for those who want to experience a quieter side of the high mountains. Here the day can go from skiing to sauna, from mountain hike to mountain dinner, from navvy history to midnight sun, or from short family experiences to longer adventures in open terrain.
