Accessibility in Narvik city center

Narvik city center is compact, and many hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions are located within a relatively small area. At the same time, the city is located between the fjord and the mountains, and some streets and areas have a gradient. Therefore, a distance that looks short on the map may be experienced differently depending on mobility and means of transport.

Several businesses have lifts, step-free access, accessible toilets or other facilitation. Visit Narvik's own partner listings contain information about, among other things, wheelchair accessibility, lifts, ramps, adapted bathrooms, allergy-friendly rooms and adaptations for vision and hearing where the actors have reported this.

Use the information as a starting point, but contact the venue directly if a particular solution is crucial for your visit.

Winter can affect accessibility

Winter is an important part of life in the Narvik region, but snow and ice can make accessibility more demanding, especially for people who use wheelchairs, walkers or other assistive devices. This is a general challenge when travelling in Northern Norway.

Narvik municipality carries out plowing and spreading of municipal roads and selected sidewalks, stairs and walkways, but weather and snowfall can still affect the conditions throughout the day.

Hotels and accommodation

The facilitation varies between accommodations in the region. Visit Narvik's overview includes hotels and other accommodations with accessible rooms, elevators, ramps, adapted bathrooms or allergy-friendly alternatives.

However, it is important to investigate whether the solution actually suits your needs before ordering. An "accessible room" can be designed differently from hotel to hotel.

Please contact the property if you need specific information about, for example, step-free access, bed height, space by the bed, shower solution, grab bars, lift, parking, allergy adaptation or other conditions.

Bus and public transport

The city buses in Narvik are wheelchair accessible, and the regional buses follow similar accessibility requirements. A walker and stroller can also be brought.

At the same time, Reis Nordland informs about specific maximum dimensions and weight limits for wheelchairs. The restrictions also vary somewhat between city and regional buses, so users of larger or heavier electric wheelchairs should check the conditions before travelling.

This is an important distinction: The airport bus between Narvik and Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes has different conditions than the ordinary scheduled buses. The airport bus's current information states that for safety and space reasons, they can only take manual wheelchairs within certain dimensions and weight limits, and that space must be reserved in advance.

Therefore, always check the relevant carrier before travel if you use a wheelchair or other larger aid.

Taxi and adapted transport

Taxis can be a flexible option if regular public transport does not suit your needs. Narvik Taxi states that they have larger vehicles for groups and people with special needs. Visit Narvik recommends informing the taxi company in advance if you need a specific type of vehicle or facilitation.

There are also tour bus operators in the region with more specialized equipment.

When booking, you should state whether you are using a manual or electric wheelchair and whether you will be sitting in the chair during transport.

Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes

Avinor offers assistance to travelers with disabilities or reduced mobility at its airports. The service may include, among other things, assistance through the airport, when boarding and with a wheelchair. Avinor recommends that assistance is booked through the airline or travel agency at least 48 hours before departure.

Assistance is not just for people with reduced mobility. Avinor also describes facilitation for travellers with visual or hearing impairments and for people with non-visible disabilities, including autism, ADHD or other cognitive needs.

Specify your needs as specifically as possible when booking your trip.

Activities and experiences

The Narvik region contains everything from cultural and train trips close to the city to activities in fjord and mountain terrain. Availability therefore varies significantly from experience to experience.

Some offers have specific facilitation. Arctic Train states, for example, that the train on the trip between Narvik and Bjørnfjell has separate seats for wheelchair users. Other activities take place on natural surfaces, in snow, on the sea or in terrain where physical accessibility may be limited.
