Sustainable destination

The Narvik region is labelled as a Sustainable Destination. Here you can read more about what it means, how we work, and why collaboration, openness and continuous improvement are important for the development of the destination.

The Narvik region is labelled as a Sustainable Destination. This means that we work systematically and long-term to develop tourism in a way that takes care of nature, culture, local communities and value creation in the region.

Being labelled does not mean that we have reached our goal, but that we are committed to continuous improvement, transparency and collaboration. We want to develop a destination where visitors get powerful experiences, while tourism contributes positively to the people who live here and to the natural and cultural values on which we build our experiences.

The Narvik region is shaped by contrasts – fjord and mountains, city and wilderness, history and future. Therefore, destination development must also be based on balance: between growth and responsibility, experiences and preservation, guests and local communities.

About the Sustainable Destination label

The Narvik region is labelled as a Sustainable Destination. The labelling scheme is a management system developed by Innovation Norway, to ensure that destinations work as sustainably as possible.

  • The " Sustainable Destination" labelling scheme is owned by Innovation Norway, which is responsible for the labelling scheme.
  • The scheme is a tool for systematising the work on sustainability at a destination, and thus a tool for development.
  • The labelling scheme has been approved by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Norway is thus one of the few countries that has an internationally approved national standard for sustainability in tourism.
  • The labelling of the Narvik region as a sustainable destination applies to Gratangen, Lavangen and Narvik municipalities.

The Narvik region was approved as a sustainable destination on 28 February 2022. We were rebranded in November 2025.

The Sustainable Destination label is valid for three years from approval. To maintain the label, the destination must update the answer and documentation every three years. It is also a goal of the Sustainable Destination label to highlight that we are continuously working for a more sustainable development at our destination. That is why we publish our annual reports on our website, see below. The first reporting year was 2022.
