Description

The Hiroshima Stone was donated to Narvik by Tadatoshi Akiba, the former mayor of Hiroshima. The gift followed Narvik’s decision in 2005 to join Mayors for Peace, an international network of cities and municipalities working for peace and disarmament. The stone comes from the area known as the hypocentre, or ground zero, in Hiroshima - the city hit by the atomic bomb on 6 August 1945. In Narvik, the stone was unveiled on 6 August 2006 together with the monument “Peace is a Promise of the Future.” Both monuments are located in Narvik’s Town Square and together form a peace memorial in the heart of the town. The sculpture “Peace is a Promise of the Future” was created by sculptor Håkon Anton Fagerås and unveiled on the same day as the Hiroshima Stone. Together, the monuments offer visitors a place for reflection - on the consequences of war, civilian suffering and the hope for a peaceful future.
