Ballangen Museum takes you back to a time when mining shaped working life, everyday life and the local community in Ballangen. The museum is housed in the former administration building of Bjørkaasen Gruber, dating from 1919, a historic building that is itself an important part of the story.

Mining history is at the heart of the museum. Through its collections, you can discover Ballangen’s past as a thriving mining community, with objects and stories illustrating how the industry left its mark on the area. The museum also highlights local farming traditions, school history and domestic life.

Bjørkaasen Gruber was the cornerstone of the Ballangen community for more than 50 years, developing facilities including a washery, workshops, a power station, housing and offices. At the museum, you can also explore objects connected to Ballangen’s electrical history, including parts of the control panel from the Bjørkåsen power station. Completed in 1921, the power station supported continued mining operations while also improving the local supply of electricity, heating and water.
