Description

Join us on a historical walk in Björkliden, where the mountain landscape and railway history follow each other closely. In 2026, Björkliden celebrates 100 years as a mountain destination, and this guided tour is part of the anniversary celebration. The walk follows the Navvy Trail, which was used as a transport route for materials during the construction of the Iron Ore Railway more than 100 years ago. The trail goes through lush mountain birch forest and past flowing streams on the way to the Navvy Cemetery. Along the way, the guide tells you about the people who worked on the railway, and about what life along the tracks was like around the turn of the last century. The history also has a clear connection to Narvik. Björkliden grew in connection with the construction of the Ore Railway, the railway that would transport iron ore from Kiruna westwards to Narvik harbour. Thus, the hike provides an insight into the history that connects the mountain areas on the Swedish side with Narvik and the Ofotfjord. From the Navvy Cemetery, the tour continues up into the open mountain landscape. If the weather and conditions allow, there will be a break along the way and the opportunity for a swim in Kratersjön before the hike goes back towards Björkliden.
