A week's journey by dog sled through Dividalen National Park

The daily program is adapted to weather, daylight and snow conditions. In the morning, the camp is packed, and the participants then travel 20-100 km per day by dog sled. Each participant gets their own dog team of 4-6 dogs and a sled loaded with all the necessary equipment to travel autonomously in the mountains. The nights are spent in remote mountain huts, tents or reindeer herding huts, and participants have the opportunity to experience the Northern Lights (until mid-March). The trip goes over large lakes, birch-covered valleys, mountain passes and open plateaus. The area is home to reindeer, foxes, grouse, hares, lynx, wolverines, lemmings, moose and brown bears – but usually the participants only see their tracks. The landscape is more reminiscent of a snow-covered desert than traditional wilderness. The area has been a seasonal home for Sami reindeer herders for centuries. On the trip, participants will meet reindeer and partly follow old migration routes between grazing areas. The mountains' remoteness and potentially demanding weather necessitate a flexible hiking schedule and good physical fitness. The trip is adapted daily according to the weather conditions. On the trip, close cooperation between human and dog is crucial. Participants are responsible for their own dog team, including learning to harness, feed and handle the dogs. Program Day 1: Arrival at Bardufoss airport, transfer to the husky farm (30 min), welcome dinner, meeting with the dogs and overnight stay in the log house. Day 2: Training day. Breakfast, feeding the dogs, training around the farm. Afternoon: review of equipment and planning of the trip the next day. Day 3: Breakfast, load dogs and equipment on the car, drive 1 hour to the starting point in Dividalen. Pack all your food and equipment for the next few days. Approx. 35 km to the first cabin/camp. Days 4–7: Dog sledding expedition. Depending on weather and snow conditions, spend the night in cabins (Dærtahytta, Moska, Rostahytta) or in expedition tents. Daily distance: 25–60 km (4–6 hours). Lunch along the way. On day 7, return to the husky farm for shower, sauna and farewell dinner. Day 8: Departure after breakfast. The walk requires moderate physical fitness: it is necessary to kick and help the dogs up hills, and slow down the sled. In wilderness cabins, participants sleep in mixed rooms. The cabins have a wood stove, no electricity or running water. When staying in tents, a gas stove and warm winter bags are used. Dry toilets are available in the cabins, but at tent camps, toilets are dug in the snow. No previous experience with dog sledding is required, but participants must like animals and care for them.
