Welcome to a fascinating and atmospheric exhibition opening at Narvik Museum on Sunday, September 6! We invite visitors to step into a world of old legends, mysterious events, supernatural encounters and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The exhibition “Did You Hear That? – Legends That Warn and Foretell” takes us into stories from Ofoten, Lofoten and Vesterålen – tales of people who encountered the unexplained, came face to face with danger or received warnings about things yet to come.

The exhibition is particularly suited to older children and adults, offering an opportunity to explore how traditional stories have been used not only for entertainment, but also to teach, inspire and make sense of the world around us.

Description

A world of ghosts, draugr and mysterious warnings

Imagine a dark evening. We gather together and tell stories about ghosts and draugr. About people who narrowly escaped death. About someone who was rescued from a storm. And about those who lost everything because they took more than they needed.

The stories are told again and again. Perhaps some details change over time, but the essence remains. And a hundred years from now, perhaps the same stories will still be told.

Legends are stories about something that is said to have happened – historical events and people, the origins of landscapes and natural features, and encounters between humans and the supernatural. They can entertain, inspire and frighten us, while also offering explanations for things we cannot fully understand.

This 2026 travelling exhibition has been created by Øksnes Museum and Narvik Museum, presenting legends from Ofoten, Lofoten and Vesterålen. The selected stories focus on encounters with supernatural beings or forces that seem to know more than humans do.

In these legends, people may be warned of impending danger or receive signs of something good or bad that may happen. Perhaps the stories were a way of passing on knowledge and learning from the experiences of others. Perhaps they also gave people a way to express their fears, hopes and encounters with the unknown.
