The International Day of Older Persons is an important opportunity to highlight the value, life experience and contributions of older people to society. This year, the Senior Citizens’ Council of Narvik is marking the day at three locations in the municipality – in Kjøpsvik, Ballangen and Narvik. The aim is to create meeting places for older people, promote social connection and joy, and draw attention to the opportunities, challenges and rights of an ageing population.

This year’s themes are “An active and social life as a senior” and “Active choices for a good life throughout the entire life course.” These themes highlight the importance of activity, social participation and the opportunity to make active choices throughout life.

Description

The Senior Citizens’ Council of Narvik wants to use the International Day of Older Persons as an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the important contributions that older people make to society. Older people represent a valuable resource through their knowledge, experience, engagement and contributions to families, working life, voluntary organisations and local communities.

“Globally, nationally and locally, the 60+ age group is the fastest-growing population group. The demographic composition has changed significantly over just a few decades – and this development will continue,” says Kjell Inge Mentzen, Chair of the Senior Citizens’ Council of Narvik Municipality.

These demographic changes make it increasingly important to create opportunities for older people to enjoy an active, social and meaningful everyday life. A good life throughout the entire life course includes opportunities to participate in society, meet other people, stay physically and socially active, and make personal choices.

The International Day of Older Persons was established by the United Nations in 1990. The purpose was to put the situation and rights of older people on the global and local agenda, while also recognising the older generation and the value of their life experience and contributions.

In Narvik Municipality, the day will be marked with events in Kjøpsvik, Ballangen and Narvik. The programme will include talks, a presentation on “Livsglede for eldre” (Joy of Life for Older People), an address, singing and music. There will also be an opportunity to enjoy coffee and cake and spend time together in a friendly and social atmosphere.

The International Day of Older Persons is therefore about more than age. It is about people, community, opportunities and quality of life – and about creating a society where it is good to grow older, and where older people have the opportunity to participate, contribute and make their own choices throughout life.
