Description

Join Arctic Train on a train journey along the Ofotbanen, the Narvik region's most important and most famous historical thoroughfare. The journey goes through a raw Arctic landscape, with views of the ice-blue Rombaksfjord, towering mountains and dramatic waterfalls. In winter, the landscape is framed by snow and low Arctic light, while summer can provide long evenings under the midnight sun.

The Ofot Line was built to transport iron ore from the mines in Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik. Work started in the late 1800s, and more than 5000 navvies helped build the line through demanding mountainous terrain with bridges, tunnels and steep climbs. The line opened in 1902 and later became strategically important during World War II, when control of iron ore transport was a central part of the Battle of Narvik in 1940.

Along the way, the train passes landscapes and places with strong stories. Rombaksbotn was once a lively construction community during the construction of the railway, and is today connected to the historic Navvy Road. Further up in the mountains is Katterat station, a roadless mountain station and gateway to the surrounding mountain areas. Nearby is also Norddalsbrua, a clear reminder of both engineering and the railway's strategic importance.

Today, the Ofot Line is still an important transport route for iron ore, but also an experience for guests who want to see how nature, engineering and history are connected. With an audio guide on board, you get historical information in Norwegian, English or German before the train continues towards Bjørnfjell at the Swedish border and returns to Narvik.
