The Freedom Monument - Life Rising from Chaos

In the heart of Narvik, the Freedom Monument is one of the city’s best-known landmarks. The sculpture is a symbol of hope, freedom and new life after the destruction of war.

The monument shows an upright woman holding a child high in her arms. The motif symbolises life rising from chaos – a powerful image of renewal after the Second World War. The woman stands on a rosebud, representing growth and the future.

The sculpture was created by Finn Eriksen and is located at Narvik’s main square. It was unveiled on 30 June 1956 by government minister Åse Bjerkholdt. The monument was financed by Narvik Municipality and through public fundraising.

Locally, the monument is also known as “The Lady on the Square”.
