The Norwegian Touring Theatre: Cake Jazz

What happens when children take charge of the show—and the kitchen? “Cake Jazz” is a lively family production from Riksteatret that blends humour, music, imagination, and delightful baking chaos. Audiences of all ages are invited into a world where creativity knows no limits, rules are made to be challenged, and the most unexpected ingredients can end up in the mixing bowl.

Description

“Cake Jazz” follows the Grytebust family as they prepare to bake a cake together. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when the telephone rings. The call comes from the jazz club The Blue Mug, where a cancelled performance has left organisers in a panic. They urgently need Mum and Dad to step in and perform on stage.

As soon as the door closes behind them, an exciting opportunity opens up for the children. Left on their own, they decide to create the cake of their dreams, adding whatever ingredients they like. Their imagination quickly takes over, and the recipe becomes more unusual with every new addition. But what happens when they accidentally pour Grandpa’s ashes into the cake batter?

Filled with humour, rhythm, and inventive storytelling, “Cake Jazz” is a theatrical adventure that delights both children and adults. The production combines playful comedy, energetic musical moments, and unexpected twists that keep audiences engaged from beginning to end.

Directed by Gunnar Eiriksson, whose imaginative approach to family theatre has captivated audiences for years, “Cake Jazz” celebrates curiosity, creativity, and the joyful unpredictability of childhood.

Suitable for children aged 5 and above—and for adults who still remember what it feels like to think beyond the recipe.
