Travel trough Dividalen national park and its surrounding wilderness areas!
Group size: 4–5 participants
Level: Custom trips – from beginner to advanced
Location: Flights to Bardufoss or Tromsø (connection to Bardufoss by bus 100)
Accommodation: Shared rooms at the husky farm, mountain huts, cabins, or winter camping upon group agreement
Landscape: Pine and birch forests, bare mountains, valleys, frozen lakes and rivers, high Nordic plateaus, mountain pastures, and tundra
Each participant is responsible for their own dog team, consisting of 4–6 dogs and a sled equipped with everything needed for independent travel in the mountains. Nights are spent in remote mountain huts, tents, or reindeer herder cabins, with the opportunity to see the Northern Lights (until mid-March).
Travel through stunning frozen landscapes
The expedition passes large frozen lakes, birch-covered valleys, mountain passes, and vast open plateaus. The area is home to reindeer, fox, ptarmigan, hare, lynx, wolverine, lemming, moose, and brown bear – though participants usually see only tracks. The landscape feels more like a snow-covered desert than traditional wilderness.
Follow the footsteps of Sami reindeer herders
The region has been a seasonal home for Sami reindeer herders for centuries. During the tour, participants may encounter reindeer and partly follow traditional migration routes between grazing areas.
Remote and weather-adapted
The remoteness of the mountains and potentially challenging weather conditions require a flexible itinerary and good physical fitness. The tour is adjusted daily based on weather conditions.
Dog-human cooperation
Close cooperation between human and dog is essential. Participants are responsible for their own dog team, including learning to harness, feed, and handle the dogs.
Program
Day 1: Arrival at Bardufoss Airport, transfer to the husky farm (30 min), welcome dinner, meet the dogs, overnight in the log-house.
Day 2: Training day. Breakfast, feed the dogs, training run around the farm. Afternoon: equipment briefing and planning for the next day.
Day 3: Breakfast, load dogs and equipment in the car, drive 1 hour to the start point in Dividalen. Pack all food and equipment for the following days. Travel approx. 35 km to the first cabin/camp.
Days 4–7: Dogsled expedition. Depending on weather and snow conditions, stay in huts (Dærtahytta, Moska, Rostahytta) or in expedition tents. Daily distance: 25–60 km (4–6 hours). Lunch on the trail. On day 7, return to the husky farm for a warm shower, sauna, and farewell dinner.
Day 8: Departure after breakfast.
Physical requirements
The tour requires moderate fitness: participants need to help the dogs uphill and brake the sled downhill.
