John Hammersmark has an impressive military career that began in the Army at the age of 19. He has completed a number of prestigious educations, including the Command School, the War College, the Staff College and a Master's degree from the Norwegian National Defence University. With 23 years of service in the Armed Forces, he ended his career as a lieutenant colonel, after having held key positions in several demanding units in the armed forces. Hammersmark has participated in sharp operations in Bosnia and Afghanistan, and has specialized in Hunter Service, where effort, perseverance and cooperation are crucial.

After leaving the Armed Forces in 2015, he has developed his career in the civilian sector as Director of Security and Emergency Preparedness at the Norwegian Shipowners' Association, a role he held until 2022. Here he handled global security challenges related to over 1,800 Norwegian ships in international waters. Hammersmark is known for his strategic assessments and ability to navigate complex issues, and often shares his experiences and reflections on cooperation and adversity, which is relevant in both military and civilian contexts.

Hammersmark is well known to most as the Captain in the television series "Kompani Lauritzen".
