The Arctic and Svalbard in a New Security Policy Era
The evening begins with a broad overview of the Arctic — its land and sea areas, history, key actors, interests, ambitions, conflicts, and possible future scenarios. Why is the Arctic so important for Norway and its allies?
The focus will then shift to Svalbard and its significance to Norway. Topics include history, sovereignty, governance, and the current situation on the archipelago, as well as emergency preparedness in Longyearbyen. What is it like living so close to a Russian settlement? What lessons have been learned through major events and crises, and could mainland municipalities learn something from Svalbard’s experiences?
Two highly experienced speakers will share their knowledge and perspectives:
Arne O. Holm has spent more than a decade studying and commenting on Arctic affairs and is widely recognized as a commentator and investigative journalist on northern issues. He is editor and commentator at High North News
and previously served as editor of Svalbardposten, in addition to working as a journalist for Dagbladet and Dagens Næringsliv.
Terje Aunevik has lived in Longyearbyen for 28 years and brings extensive experience in business, logistics, preparedness, and community development in the Arctic. He currently serves as head of the local council in Longyearbyen and has held leadership roles in NHO Arktis, Svalbard Næringsforening, and Svalbard Reiselivsråd.
This is a rare opportunity to gain deeper insight into some of the most important issues concerning the Arctic and Svalbard — and it is happening right here in Narvik. Don’t miss it.
