Bjorkliden Ski Resort
With sweeping panoramas over Torneträsk and the unmistakable silhouette of Lapporten rising on the horizon, Björkliden is one of Lapland’s most beautifully situated ski resorts. Just north of the Arctic Circle, this small and authentic mountain destination offers a rare balance: relaxed skiing, genuine mountain culture, and direct access to some of Sweden’s most spectacular alpine terrain.
Björkliden is a place where the mountains feel close, the atmosphere feels warm, and adventure waits quietly beyond the next ridge.
One of Europe’s Last Wildernesses
Set within one of Europe’s last true wilderness areas, Björkliden is a destination where tranquillity and adventure coexist in harmony. With small-scale operations as its strength, the resort has remained deliberately intimate, prioritising presence, community, and a deep respect for the rhythm of the mountains.
Since welcoming its first guests nearly a century ago, Björkliden has offered a sanctuary for both body and soul, a place where nature frames every experience, and where memories are shaped by silence, space, and sweeping scenery.
A Resort Framed by Legend and Landscape
With 23 runs served by five lifts, Björkliden offers terrain for all levels, from wide, gentle slopes ideal for beginners to more demanding sections for experienced skiers. The layout makes it especially well suited for families and mixed-level groups, with short lift lines and a calm, unhurried pace that keeps the focus on skiing rather than queues.
What truly defines the resort, however, is its setting. Torneträsk stretches far below like a gleaming ribbon of blue, while Lapporten rises as a natural gateway into the Swedish mountains. On clear days, the views alone are worth the journey north.
A Gateway to Backcountry Adventures
Björkliden is also a favourite base for ski touring and cross-country skiing. Rolling terrain leads toward dramatic peaks, offering routes for both newcomers and seasoned tourers seeking solitude and untracked snow.
Nearby, two legendary destinations further elevate the experience. Nine kilometres north of Björkliden lies Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge, Sweden’s highest mountain lodge and restaurant, accessible on skis, on foot, or by snowcat in winter. Guests are rewarded with a two-course dinner, sauna, and unforgettable views from 1,228 metres above sea level and the famous Låkta waffle.
Trollsjön (Rissájávri), often described as Sweden’s clearest lake, is surrounded by dramatic peaks and attracts visitors year-round for hiking and ski touring.
Perfect for Families & Beginners
Björkliden has long been cherished by families for its welcoming and safe environment. Friendly, experienced ski instructors, gentle beginner slopes, and dedicated play areas create an ideal setting for learning and confidence-building on snow. Easy access to nature-based winter experiences adds variety to each day. Children progress at their own pace, while adults enjoy relaxed, panoramic runs overlooking one of Scandinavia’s most scenic mountain regions.
Arctic Adventures All Year
Björkliden is widely regarded as one of the best places in the world to experience the Northern Lights. With minimal light pollution and wide-open skies, the aurora often dances directly above the resort. Winter and spring bring Northern Lights excursions by snowshoe or snowmobile, along with dog sledding across frozen lakes, snowmobile safaris into Lapland’s high country, ice fishing, and guided mountain tours.
When the snow melts, Björkliden transforms into a summer haven for hiking, trail running, fishing, mountain biking, and family-friendly wilderness exploration beneath the midnight sun.
Stay, Dine & Enjoy Mountain Life
Accommodation reflects Björkliden’s mountain character and long traditions. Guests can choose between Hotel Fjället, a four-star hotel with sweeping valley views, Kåppas Cabin Village with ski-in/ski-out cabins, Solhyllan log cabins for families and groups, or overnight stays at Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge for a truly remote experience.
Dining is an integral part of mountain life here, ranging from casual slope-side lunches to atmospheric dinners at Sweden’s highest restaurant. Restaurants and bars include Restaurang Lapporten, Lobbybaren, Bar Rallaren, Snöbaren, Rakkas Lapp Cot, and Låktatjåkko Fjällstation. Services also include equipment rental, a sports shop, sauna facilities, and professional guides.
A Place Shaped by History
Björkliden’s story is closely tied to the development of northern Scandinavia. Founded in the early 20th century as accommodation for engineers working on Malmbanan, the iron ore railway connecting Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik, the village soon became a mountain retreat known for its protected location and remarkable views.
Historic buildings such as Gammelgården, built in 1906, still stand today, while Hotel Fjället opened in 1939 alongside the construction of Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge. Over the decades, Björkliden has evolved through periods of growth, war, reconstruction, and renewal, always shaped by the surrounding mountains.
Easy Access to the Mountains
Björkliden is easily reached by train from Narvik or Kiruna, or by car or bus along the scenic E10. The ski pass is valid at both Björkliden and nearby Riksgränsen, with daily transfers connecting the two resorts.
A Feeling of Space, Calm, and Freedom
Where Riksgränsen delivers the raw, iconic energy of Arctic skiing, Björkliden offers its softer counterpart: serenity, beauty, and a deep connection to the landscape.
Families find a relaxed place to be together. Adventurers discover endless possibilities in the surrounding mountains. Everyone is rewarded with open space and views that linger long after the journey ends.
This is Björkliden, peaceful, panoramic, and timeless.
