The core in Efjord

Kjerna in Efjord is an airy mountain hike at Skjellesvikskaret, south of Narvik. The trip goes through open mountain terrain, polished rock and stone scree to a distinctive viewpoint 648 meters above sea level, with magnificent views of Efjord, Vestfjorden and the surrounding mountains.

Description

Kjerna is located in the mountain area at Skjellesvikskaret in Efjord, under Stortinden and not far from the E6. The rock formation protrudes clearly into the landscape and is often referred to as Northern Norway's answer to the Pulpit Rock. Here you will encounter a landscape where fjords, polished mountainsides and steep peaks are close to each other.

The trip starts from the parking lot by the E6 and goes up on the opposite side of the road. The first part goes in open mountain terrain with a lot of bare rock and slower climbs. Gradually, the terrain becomes steeper, and the route continues through rocks, scree and low vegetation before approaching the viewpoint at Kjerna.

From the top at 648 meters above sea level, you get a view of the Efjorden and Vestfjord, the mountains around the Efjord valley and further towards famous landmarks such as Stetind and the Lofoten Wall. Below you is the village of Eide, and around you the mountain walls rise steeply. This is a trip where the feeling of altitude and the view are a clear part of the experience.

Kjerna is suitable for hikers with basic hiking experience and average endurance. The trip can be done by families, but requires careful travel, especially in steep sections and near the edge of the top. Keep a good distance from the cliff, and take extra care with children and dogs.
