The Narvik region offers spectacular scenery that attracts many drone pilots. However, Norway has strict regulations for drone operations. All drone pilots are responsible for knowing and complying with the national rules before flying.
General Rules
In Norway, the following main rules apply to recreational drone use:
- You must be registered as a drone operator and complete the required online course/exam (see the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority and flydrone.no).
- The drone must always remain within visual line of sight.
- The maximum flight altitude is 120 metres above ground level.
- It is prohibited to fly over crowds or near emergency operations.
- You must respect privacy and avoid flying over private property without permission.

Temporary Restrictions – Cold Response
The Narvik region regularly hosts the military winter exercise Cold Response every year in March. During this period, temporary flight restrictions or total drone bans will apply in parts of the region.
It is the drone operator’s responsibility to:
- Check for temporary restrictions (NOTAMs)
- Follow instructions from authorities
- Respect local signage and information in the area
- Restricted areas
Violations of flight restrictions may result in serious consequences such as deportation.
Local Conditions and Protected Areas
In addition to national regulations, further restrictions may apply in:
- Areas near airports
- Military zones
- Nature reserves and protected areas
- Large events or public gatherings
We kindly ask all visitors to show consideration for nature, wildlife, local residents and other guests.
If in doubt, do not fly.
