Long-Distance Trekking
The Narvik region marks the northern gateway to two of the Nordic countries’ most iconic long-distance trails: Nordlandsruta and Kungsleden. Together, these routes offer unmatched opportunities for multi-day trekking across breathtaking alpine landscapes, wild plateaus, and cross-border wilderness.
Nordlandsruta
Beginning in the dramatic Narvik Mountains, Nordlandsruta stretches over 650 kilometers along the Norway–Sweden border. The trail winds through three national parks, Sami settlements, and some of Northern Scandinavia’s most pristine terrain. Thanks to a network of 15 DNT Narvik cabins, hikers can choose between short hut-to-hut adventures or extended journeys lasting up to two weeks.
DNT Narvik Cabin Network
Supporting the Nordlandsruta and surrounding trails is an extensive cabin network maintained by DNT Narvik, offering infrastructure that makes multi-day trekking both accessible and flexible. The Narvik Mountains feature a high plateau landscape between 650 and 1,000 meters above sea level, dotted with sharp peaks, glaciers, and lush valleys. Across this terrain, DNT Narvik operates 15 mountain cabins, spaced along marked trails from Bjørnfjell in the north to Hellemobotn in the south.
These self-service and unstaffed cabins allow hikers to travel hut-to-hut for up to 15 days, or choose shorter sections depending on time and ability. Most cabins are equipped with bunks, cooking facilities, heating, and basic gear, while some even include saunas or are suitable for families with small children. Hikers simply bring their own food and a DNT key, available for loan in Narvik. With this well-maintained system, the Narvik region offers one of the most user-friendly long-distance hiking experiences in Northern Scandinavia.
Kungsleden
Just across the border from Narvik, the legendary Kungsleden (“The King’s Trail”) begins in Abisko, a scenic Swedish village easily reached by train from Narvik. This iconic trail stretches over 400 kilometers south through the heart of Swedish Lapland, winding through dramatic mountain valleys, birch forests, and alpine plateaus.
The first section from Abisko to Nikkaluokta is one of the most popular, taking hikers past the towering peaks of Lapporten and through the majestic Abisko National Park. Along the trail, you’ll find a well-developed system of STF mountain huts, spaced roughly a day’s walk apart, offering simple but comfortable accommodations and basic provisions. No tents or heavy loads are needed, just bring your food and enjoy light-packing freedom.
Kungsleden offers a striking contrast to the rugged and remote feel of Nordlandsruta, with its wide trails, marked routes, and slightly lower elevation. For those combining both trails, it serves as the perfect extension or return route, making it easy to craft a multi-day, cross-border hiking experience between Norway and Sweden.
Trek Across Borders
Because these trails run parallel to each other along the border, hikers can combine segments from both, creating custom loop hikes or cross-border treks. With convenient train access from Narvik to stations like Katterat and Bjørnfjell, and cabins on both sides of the border, the region offers seamless logistics for anyone seeking solitude and adventure in the high north.
A Popular Route: Narvik to Abisko
One of the most rewarding options is a 4-day hike from Narvik to Abisko. Start with a scenic train ride to Katterat, then follow 68 kilometers of marked trails through the Narvik Mountains, staying in five cozy DNT and STF cabins along the way. With only 857 meters of total elevation gain and spectacular scenery throughout, this route is ideal for trekkers wanting an accessible but unforgettable adventure. View route map and details.
Whether you're venturing out for a weekend escape or a full-scale Nordic expedition, the Narvik region is where long-distance trekking truly begins.
